The trap of measuring power: A social-philosophical reconstruction of [[relational risk]] theory.

 awareness of the problem

The discussions in Series 1 and 2 share a common blind spot. Both authors assume that relational risk is an objective reality that must be discovered, while ignoring the fact that the act of measurement itself reproduces social power relations. The AI pipeline proposal secures technical sophistication, but fails to recognize that it is an act of building a new surveillance device (dispositif) in the Foucaultian sense.

Key Argument 1: Measurement is not neutral — Foucault's power-knowledge complex

Granger causal testing and XAI-based interpretability have the appearance of scientific rationality, but which networks are classified as risky and which relationships are normal are not purely technical issues. As Foucault shows in 『Monitoring and Punishment』, measurement systems contain normalizing judgments. The disintegration of the [[executive network]], which the dynamic knowledge graph captures as a 'risk signal', may at the same time be the formation of a counter-hegemonic coalition that challenges the existing governance structure. When the AI pipeline normalizes this into a risk indicator, it is transformed into a tool that reproduces and stabilizes existing power arrangements.

Key Argument 2: Concealment of Capital Transformation — Bourdieu’s Field Theory

Economic Perspective It is insufficient from a Bourdieuian perspective to limit Piketty's intellectual r>g structure to the problem of economic capital concentration. The real danger of capital concentration lies in the conversion mechanisms through which economic capital is converted into [[social capital]] and cultural capital. Corporate board networks are not simply information channels, but what Bourdieu calls champs—structured spaces of competitive positions. Measuring relational risk only through graph theory erases the layers of symbolic violence and habitus that operate within this field. The signal for network disintegration is not simply a loss of information, but a crisis point where the rules of the field themselves are renegotiated.

Key argument 3: Access to measurement infrastructure [[inequality]]

The most serious blind spot is who has access to this measurement infrastructure. Actors who can build and operate T-GNN and XAI-based risk systems are limited to large financial institutions and regulatory agencies. According to Habermas' lifeworld-system dichotomy, this technological device opens a new path through which the logic of the system (money and power) colonizes the lifeworld. When relational risk measurement becomes information available only to a small number of system actors, the inequality produced by the r>g structure now deepens at the level of [[information asymmetry]].

 Conclusion and research suggestions

Three shifts are necessary for relational risk theory to embrace the contributions of critical social science. First, multiple stakeholders should participate in the definition of risk categories by introducing Habermasian communicative rationality in the design process of the measurement system. Second, through Bourdieu's field theory, the network must be reconceptualized as a structure of power positions rather than a simple graph. Third, the accessibility and publicness of the measurement infrastructure itself must be explicitly addressed at the research design stage. The act of measuring risk is also the act of constructing risk.
